## Description

## What is it?

The **AAL – Subtle EQ RCA** is a fully analog stereo audio processor designed for simple and musical tone shaping.

Rather than offering surgical correction or dozens of parameters, the Subtle EQ uses just three broad tone controls — **Bass, Mid and Treble** — together with three levels of enhancement:

- **Gentle** – Light enhancement, ideal for subtle everyday listening.
- **Subtle** – A balanced combination of natural sound and added presence.
- **Enhanced** – A stronger effect when more tonal character is desired.

A relay-operated **True Bypass** allows instant comparison between the processed and original signal.

The Subtle EQ is intended for line-level stereo RCA signals and can be used between a source and amplifier, DAC and preamplifier, or anywhere gentle analog tone shaping is desired.

## Why did you make it?

Sometimes an audio system sounds technically good but just a little too... polite.

I wanted an equalizer that could add **presence, body and enjoyment** without turning listening into an exercise involving dozens of controls, frequency displays and complicated settings.

The project started by experimenting with a very simple existing analog tone-control concept. I liked its philosophy, but wanted to see how far it could be taken with a completely redesigned PCB, carefully selected components, a proper symmetrical power supply, improved grounding and decoupling, True Bypass and extensive testing.

After several weeks of measurements, modifications and listening tests, the **AAL Subtle EQ** was born.

The idea remains deliberately simple:

**Three knobs. Three levels of enhancement. Adjust by ear and enjoy the music.**

## What makes it special?

The Subtle EQ is not intended to replace a parametric or corrective equalizer.

It is a **broad, intuitive tone-shaping tool** designed to make useful and musical adjustments quickly.

Behind its deliberately simple controls is a completely redesigned AAL circuit board using:

- NE5532 low-noise audio operational amplifiers
- Panasonic, Vishay, WIMA and other quality capacitors
- 1% metal-film resistors
- 0.1% resistors in critical positions
- Relay-operated True Bypass
- Optimized PCB routing, grounding and power-supply decoupling
- Components sourced from authorized distributors such as Mouser and TME

The electronics have been developed through repeated measurements and real-world listening tests rather than simply reproducing the original circuit.

Each unit is **hand assembled, inspected and individually tested before shipping**.

The signal path is entirely analog. No DSP or digital processing is used.

## Why this price?

The Subtle EQ began with a simple and inexpensive circuit concept, but the final AAL version is very different from the low-cost modules that inspired the project.

The price reflects:

- A completely redesigned PCB
- Quality branded components
- Components purchased through authorized distributors
- A dedicated regulated symmetrical power supply
- Relay True Bypass
- Several PCB prototypes and design iterations
- Many hours of measurements, listening tests and development
- Manual assembly and soldering
- Individual inspection and testing of every unit

The enclosure is manufactured in-house using 3D printing. The current enclosure may show minor cosmetic imperfections inherent to the printing process, but these have no effect on operation or durability.

**For this version, I have chosen not to include the enclosure manufacturing cost in the selling price.**

You are primarily paying for the electronics, components, development and hand assembly behind the product.

## Early studio feedback

An early prototype was recently tested in a professional studio during a real mixing session.

The first feedback was especially encouraging regarding the simplicity and musical character of the EQ:

> "The highs are really smooth and pleasant, and so are the other bands. Considering how simple it is, I really think there's something here. My first impression was: wow!"

The tester particularly appreciated the idea of a simple, broad-band analog EQ that can quickly add character without requiring complex settings.
