The AVR Chip Copier is a standalone ISP programmer designed to read, store, and duplicate firmware from supported Atmel/Microchip AVR microcontrollers.
Simply read a programmed device once, store the contents in the programmer’s internal memory, and then program one or hundreds of identical devices for production, repair, or field updates. No computer is required after the initial setup.
How It Works
The AVR Chip Copier uses the standard 4-wire ISP programming interface: MISO MOSI SCK RESET A 10-pin ISP programming cable is included.
Read a Source Device
Remove jumper J1 to enter Read Mode. Connect the AVR Chip Copier to the ISP header of your programmed source device. The programmer reads the device contents and stores the data internally.
Program Target Devices
Install jumper J1 to enter Write Mode. Connect the programmer to the blank or replacement AVR device. The AVR Chip Copier programs the stored contents automatically. The process is simple, repeatable, and designed for production use.
Supported Operations
The AVR Chip Copier can copy and program: Flash memory EEPROM Fuse bits Lock bits During the initial configuration, each operation can be enabled or disabled individually. This allows you to customize exactly what is copied, programmed, verified, or ignored.
Note: If the original device has already been protected with lock bits, the contents cannot be read.
Designed for Production Programming When programming multiple boards, it is easy to accidentally miss important steps such as setting fuse bits or programming lock bits. The AVR Chip Copier simplifies the entire process by storing a complete device configuration and reproducing it consistently every time. Once configured, the programmer runs from the target device power and can program as many devices as needed. The stored data remains in memory until another device is read and replaces it.

I frequently work with AVR microcontrollers and needed a reliable way to program multiple devices without carrying a computer to every location. This programmer was created to make AVR duplication and production programming faster, easier, and more reliable.

Initial Setup
A computer is only required for the first-time configuration. Using a terminal connection, you can select the programming options and configure the read/write behavior. After setup, the AVR Chip Copier operates as a completely standalone ISP programmer. Please watch the video here.
