What is it?

This is the Ultimate Cherry MX Keyswitch 4x5 Matrix version of my Hexadecimal Keypad designs (see my separate Tindie listings for alternate versions).

Providing my Ultimate Hex Keypad design for your Retro Computing projects, which provides the ultimate key travel and tactile feedback of Cherry MX keyswitches. Providing ultimate comfort for hexadecimal data entry, and also providing full flexibility in how you choose to assemble your Hex Keypad layout. Also, the choice of a simple switch matrix, or a diode protected matrix (for preventing key ghosting).

The pin headers used for connecting the Keypad are breadboard friendly (see my Youtube videos), or the headers can easily connect with female PCB header sockets, that you might use on your own Retro computer project PCBs.

In addition, this Keypad has been designed using the standard 0.75 inch (19.05mm) centres key spacing, for natural comfort in Keypad data entry.

Cherry MX Brown Keyswitches were carefully chosen to fulfil the ultimate Retro style Hex Keypad style, with full-travel non-clicky tactile feedback.

Note: Please also see the seperate listing for my 4x4 Matrix +2 version of this Keypad. Which version best suits your Hex Keypad based project, depends on how you wish to utilise the extra Function keys.

How to Use the KeyPad

The Keypad provides a standard 4x4 matrix for the sixteen 0-9 and A-F Hexadecimal keys, together with 1 additional matrix row (4x5 total), of four function switches FN0-FN3.

Normally you would connect the 4x4 Hex Matrix to an 8 bit I/O port to enable polling the 16 hexadecimal keys. The additonal Matrix Row of 4 function keys would then be polled via an additional I/O port pin.

Pinouts for both the 9 way header (4 rows + 5 columns) are shown in the attached schematic diagram.

I provide the Keypad in Kitset form, so you can easily assemble it with your own soldering iron. All that is required is to solder in place the pin header, optionally solder diode bypass solder-bridges (if not using the diodes), and then solder the supplied 20 genuine Cherry MX Brown Keyswitches. Four Nylon PCB Stand-offs and eight Nylon Screws are also supplied, for mounting your Keypad.

• 20x 1N4148 Small Signal Diodes (for optional diode matrix protection)
• 1x 9 Pin Header strip

• 8x M3 Nylon 6mm Screws (for affixing the Stand-offs)

The Bonus FREE Gift of a Keycap Puller (see photo), is included only if you choose a combination of multiple Keycap color sets. This is because it's only needed to allow easy change-out of the Keycaps, when you buy a multiple color Option.

Optional Custom Function Keycaps Pack includes:

• 4x Custom printed Keycaps for the 4 Function Keys row (in addition to the supplied FN0 - FN3 keycaps). I will design and print your custom keycaps (4), to your requirements. You advise me (after ordering), what your preferred legends are. Keycap colour can be any of the existing colours (Beige, Black, White, also, Red or Blue). Note: For the Black, Red, Blue keycap colours, legends are White. For Beige, White keycap colours, legends are Black. For guidance, legends are generally printed in UPPER-CASE (for clarity), and are generally limited to 4 or 5 characters or symbols (in up to 2 rows). If your requirements can't be met, I'll refund the optional pack cost.
