Overview:

This Raspberry Pi HAT is a versatile communication adapter integrating an IEC 61851 Control Pilot (CP) interface with a Powerline Communication (PLC) modem. It offers creating a platform for learning, developing, and testing EV charging systems. It supports global standards including ISO 15118 and DIN 70121. The module features hardware jumpers and software-reconfigurable PLC firmware, allowing switching between EV and EVSE modes. It integrates with the open-source EVerest project to provide a platform for community-driven charging development.

Applications:

  • Protocol Mastery: Hand-on learning and familiarization with global EV charging standards and communication protocols.
  • Rapid Simulation: Quickly simulate EV or EVSE counterparts for Software-in-the-Loop and Hardware-in-the-Loop testing using open source.
  • Deep-Dive Research: Enable in-depth experimentation and analysis of charging communication.
  • Future-Ready V2X: Implement and test custom extensions for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) and grid integration.
  • Security Validation: Simplify penetration testing to identify and patch vulnerabilities.
  • Agile Prototyping: Drastically reduce time-to-market for new EV or EVSE software implementations by easily testing open-source projects (EVerest)

Key Features:

  • Compatible with Raspberry Pi 3, 4, and 5
  • Onboard jumper pins allow for configuration as either EV (Vehicle) or EVSE (Station).
  • Generates ±12V PWM signals per IEC 61851.
  • Supports ±13V max readout for monitoring of duty cycle and frequency.
  • Software-settable Mode C support for EV charging states.
  • QCA7000 PLC modem configurable as EVSE or EV
  • "Plug-and-Play" software setup by automatic Linux driver configuration from onboard EEPROM
  • Reprogrammable CP microcontroller and a dedicated UART
  • Option to operate as a dedicated PLC modem via jumper selection.
  • Capability to monitor and sniff certain SLAC messages
  • Open-Source EVerest Board Support Package: https://github.com/komakiou/EVerest/tree/feature/raspievse
  • Cost-Efficient Design by utilizing existing mass market components
