These stunning Fibonacci earrings are a perfect way to show off your unique sense of fashion while still being environmentally friendly. They are powered by hybrid supercapacitors, which can be recharged quickly and have a much longer lifespan than traditional batteries.

Why did you make it?

I have been looking for alternatives for disposable coin cell batteries that I used on wearables and these new hybrid supercapacitors were the answer. I created the original Fibonacci earrings with Zinc-Air batteries last year, and those were a big success, but these earrings use supercapacitors instead of batteries. I rewrote the code to make the wearable very energy efficient and as a result the power consumption is under 1mA on most modes. This allows the use of a super capacitor where the energy storage is much lower compared to a battery. The original design was with 0402 LEDs, but the colors were limited to blue, red, green, yellow, white and orange. This new design with 0603 LEDs allows some less common LED colors like pink and turquoise.

What makes it special?

These Supercapacitors can be recharged quickly (within 3 minutes after running for 20 hours) without any degradation in performance over time, like with traditional LiPo batteries. The capacitors are able to keep the wearable powered for at about 20 hours, and after that you just plug it into an outlet for a recharge! Super capacitors are much safer than traditional batteries and they can be charged up to 500,000 times without any harm or damage to them. There is a selection button on the back that allows the user to select one of the following modes:

The earrings have 104 LEDs per side, which can be programmed to display a variety of patterns, brightness and speed. There are five modes to choose from:

  • Demo Mode: This mode features a pre-programmed sequence of patterns.
  • Random Mode: This mode generates random patterns.
  • Party Mode 120bpm: This mode displays patterns that update at a rate of 120 beats per minute.
  • Party Mode 140bpm: This mode displays patterns that update at a rate of 140 beats per minute.
  • Theater Mode: This mode is similar to Demo Mode, but the brightness is reduced so that it is not distracting.
  • Manual Mode: This mode allows you to customize the patterns and colors.

Here are some Specifications:

  • Diameter dimension: 29mm (1-1/8")
  • Weight: 4.7 gram (0.17 oz), slightly less than a US nickel, or slightly more than the 10 cent Euro coin

California STEAM was started in the summer of 2017 in Stockton, CA by Alicia and Sander van de Bor. They added Art to STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) to create STEAM.
STEM and STEAM education is a growing necessity to meet the future demands of STEM jobs in the upcoming decades. These jobs are required in almost every field, from manufacturing to medical.
California STEAM develops creative solutions for all ages. Their classes are taught at several locations throughout Stockton (libraries, Mexican Heritage Center etc.)
The products developed by California STEAM are a combination of Art and Technology. These are designed to motivate young makers to get more familiar with electronics and programming. These young makers are the engineers of the future.
