This is the Faux Cyrillic adaptation of the open source RecurBOY video instrument created by Cyberboy666 and Guergana Tzatchkova.

The original circuit, display, and controls are all here, but the CV inputs have been set up to work with the AE Modular synthesizer format-- there are patchwire headers for modulation and speed, and it can draw power from either the AE bus or USB. It has a composite output for basic TV use, or you can use the HDMI output from the Raspberry Pi Zero itself.

Description (from the RecurBOY github page)

recurBOY is a stand-alone digital video synthesizer and sampler. it can trigger clips and run shaders to create and manipulate sd video.

  • outputs sd video over composite or hdmi
  • 2 source modes to generate video : sampler and shaders
  • process any source with additional FX
  • control shader/fx parameters directly with 4x knobs or externally with 4x cv inputs
  • all inputs also controllable via usb-midi
  • process external video through compatible usb capture cards / web-cams

Notes for the AE version

This adaptation is functional but there are a couple of things to know.

  • The power requirements are quite high-- you CAN run it from the AE bus but it can draw up to 200mA. The basic AE MASTER module can supply about 800mA, so if you will be adding it to an AE rack with more than a handful of modules you should consider running it from USB power.
  • As the pictures show, the Pi Zero is exposed-- this can be a bit of a hazard depending on your case-- it's best placed in a corner or along the top of a rack to keep the video and power cords out of the way of your patching.
  • It's a tiny linux system, so it should be shut down from the settings menu or by holding down the Play/Pause button before power is removed. It's quite possible that the file system on the SD card will be corrupted if power is pulled without a clean shutdown, and the only option will be to reimage the card.

You do need an external monitor, TV, video switcher, capture card, or some kind of display-- the little internal screen is for setting options, not for displaying video. It has composite and HDMI outputs, and works best at 720p or lower.

All that said, this thing is FUN.

What's included

  • The module
  • A Raspberry Pi Zero W

  • An RCA video cable.

What you may need

  • A video cable with mini-HDMI on one end and either full-sized HDMI or whatever your display needs on the other

Documentation

Check the links below for the RecurBoy documentation. The controls and so on are all the same as the original version-- just the CV inputs are patchwires rather than Eurorack cables.

The RecurBoy module is compatible with quickswap cases.
