The digital tachometer, when paired with an appropriate sensor (not supplied) is capable of measuring shaft speed in RPM. The tachometer can also measure intermediate shaft speed and convert the speed internally to an output shaft speed. This is achieved by having a gear ratio calculation included in the microcontroller.
The tachometer was specifically developed to measure lathe and mill rotational speed.
The microcontroller used is an enhanced 8 bit PIC24K42 operating at 64MHz. The program is written in assembly, measures the speed continuously and updates the display multiple time per second.
