UPDI Standalone Chip Copier for Microchip AVR, ATtiny & ATmega Microcontrollers

The UPDI Standalone Chip Copier is designed for reading, copying, and programming Microchip AVR microcontrollers that use the UPDI programming interface. It supports ATtiny 0-series, 1-series, and 2-series, ATmega 0-series, and AVR DA, DB, and EA devices.

Unlike a conventional programmer, the UPDI Standalone Chip Copier can first read a target device, store the data in its internal memory, and then operate as a completely standalone programmer. No computer is required during programming.

Simple Two-Step Operation

Read Mode

Remove jumper J1 and connect the programmer to your target device. The programmer will read the device and store the following information in its internal memory:

  • Flash Memory
  • EEPROM
  • Fuses
  • User Row
  • Lock Bits (when readable)

Write Mode Install jumper J1 and connect the programmer to another target device. The stored data is programmed into the new device, making it ideal for programming multiple identical units or mass production programming. It really is that simple.

Important: If the source device has its Lock Bits programmed to prevent reading, the Flash contents cannot be copied.

If you're unsure whether your device is supported, please refer to the device list below.

Ideal for Mass Production Programming

The UPDI Standalone Chip Copier is perfect for:

  • Mass Production programming
  • Copying firmware to multiple devices
  • Programming replacement microcontrollers
  • Installing bootloaders into new devices
  • Field updates and customer repairs

The programmer can Program and Verify:

  • Flash Memory
  • EEPROM
  • Fuses
  • User Row
  • Lock Bits Each operation can be individually enabled or disabled during configuration.

Fast Bootloader Programming

Programming bootloaders into new devices couldn't be easier. Simply copy the Flash memory and Fuse settings from a device that already contains the bootloader. The programmer stores this information internally, allowing you to program additional devices in just a few seconds.

UPDI Interface

Programming is performed through the single-wire UPDI interface using only three connections: VCC, GND, UPDI. A programming cable is included.

Standalone Operation

A computer is only required for the initial configuration or whenever you want to change the programmer's settings. Configuration is performed using a simple terminal program such as TeraTerm. Through the terminal interface you can enable or disable programming of:

  • Flash
  • EEPROM
  • User Row
  • Fuses
  • Lock Bits You can also skip the erase operation when only updating EEPROM data, eliminating the need to reprogram Flash memory.

Once configured, the programmer operates completely in standalone mode. It can:

  • Supply 3.3V or 5V to the target device
  • Use power from the target device 3.3V to 5V
  • Program a self-powered target operating from 1.8V to 5V

The copied Flash, EEPROM, User Row, and Fuse data remain stored in the programmer's internal memory until they are replaced.

Security

The programmer can be password protected to prevent unauthorized use.

Technical Support

After your order ships, you will receive a link to the user guide. Please read it before using the programmer.

When you purchase this programmer, you're buying directly from the original designer, not a reseller. If you have any questions, simply send me a message through the marketplace or use the email address provided in the user guide. I usually respond quickly and will do everything I can to help you successfully program your device.

Many inexpensive programmers are sold by resellers who have little technical knowledge of the products they offer. Since I designed this programmer myself, you'll receive knowledgeable answers, honest advice, and direct support from someone who understands both the hardware and software.
