June 2025 Update

  • The board revision is now v3.1
  • We have recreated the board using the schematics as a base in Kicad. (Originally was done in Sprint).
  • Some component silkscreens have been changed for less confusion. (e.g. the original PCB had EMI capacitor footprints where a ceramic capacitor was fitted.
  • More colour choice!
  • Moved the Internal/External DF0: jumpers so they are more accessible.
  • LGGR audio header added after requests (Left Ground Ground Right).
  • Copper holes left for unpopulated components after comments that they can make debugging easier.
  • Interactive BOM tool so you can check off components and easily see their locations.

A500 ++

This is a replica Printed Circuit Board (PCB) from the Commodore Amiga A500+ computer. This board is based on the last A500+ board that was produced by Commodore (Model 8A.1).

The board was created to allow Amiga A500+ computers that had damaged or faulty PCBs to be successfully repaired. This can be achieved by moving all components from an original damaged board to the replica board. Some parts can also be replaced by modern alternatives.

Despite being the last of the A500(+) models, its advances were also its ultimate downfall, as Commodore's decision to include an on-board battery to keep the clock time up to date ultimately destroys the original PCB by leaking its acid all over the board. (aka Death by Varta!)

The replica board is of the exact dimensions of the original A500+ board and can therefore be used as a direct replacement to the original PCB.

Improvements

  • Improved silkscreen with better placed component identifiers and some component values also included
  • Commodore implemented a factory "bodge" around the battery area where a diode was required to cross over another component, this has been fixed so that the diode has its own hole and doesn't need to cross over
  • The power choke has an extra footprint added to allow for a modern replacement
  • Jumper to select which floppy drive will be DF0: - This can be set to internal or external. NB: Setting external to DF0: will not set internal to DF1:, the internal drive would be disabled

Optional Extras

  • Replacement "Vidiot" board. This is a custom video hybrid part that is located at HY1 on the A500+. We can supply a replacement board that is pre-populated with all required SMD components (See images). The boards are made from an open design located here: https://github.com/SukkoPera/OpenAmigaVideoHybrid

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can the board be used with A500 OCS chipset? Most of the custom chips can be used from an A500, however, the Agnus IC is not pin-compatible and will not work. The Denise video IC will work, but misses some of the screen modes that were included in the Super-Denise IC supplied with the A500+
  • Can you provide all the components ready to go? Unfortunately not, however there is a community updated Bill Of Materials (BOM) that provides links to new and/or replacement components. This can be found at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13xq2P7Ha_PA6r3vfPw77Q9PaSZYWncYfNpqhrwdvhaY/edit#gid=0

Welcome to my Lectronz store!
I have been producing replica retro computer PCBs since around 2019 and had over 2000 successful orders via my previous Tindie store.
I have now made Lectronz the home for my store so I can hopefully provide a better service to my customers and myself.
Thanks for visiting, and I hope you find what you are looking for!
