Introduction

This is a passive board that sits under one of the 6522 VIA chips in the Commodore 1541 disk drive allowing the deivce ID number to be changed without cutting the jumpers on the 1541 mainboard. Instead the signals are routed to two pairs of pin headers, which can then be used with jumpers or wired to DIP switches to change the device ID.

Installation

Remove the 6522 VIA at UAB1 for 1541 longboards, or UC3 for shortboards. If the 6522 is not in a socket, you will need to install one. Insert the device ID switcher into the mainboard and the 6522 into the device ID board.

Usage

The two sets of pin headers determine the device ID. They can then be opened or closed using pin header jumpers or wired to external DIP switches (may require cutting the 1541 case).

The following device ID configurations are available:

  • Both closed = 8
  • Top open, bottom closed = 9
  • Top closed, bottom open = 10
  • Both open = 11

It is possible to use DIP switches without modifications to the 1541 case but it's not ideal (see images). The fuse holder has some space between the case and holder which is just enough to sneak some 24AWG or thinner wires through. Obviously this is not the best way to do it, but it doesn't block access to any of the ports, and doesn't require any case cutting.

Note external wiring and DIP switches are not included. The board will come with jumpers installed so the deivce ID will be set to 8, remove the jumpers or optionally wire up DIP switches to change the device ID.
