The second module to be added to the wonkystuff MIDI range is a 4-output MIDI Continuous Controller extractor. For an overview of the wonkystuff MIDI modules, I have written an overview article.

The mcc/4 is used to convert MIDI CC (Continuous Controller) messages into CV, allowing existing modules to be controlled by MIDI. The module generates 4 independent CV outputs derived from a programmable set of MIDI CC messages. In addition, the mcc/4 can also operate as a MIDI-CV converter.

The module consumes MIDI signals from any of the MIDI channel outputs of the mb/1.

PLEASE NOTE: This module requires the mb/1 module in order to function correctly - it does not directly connect to MIDI devices!

  • Inputs:
    • MIDI serial data (I)
  • Outputs:
    • CC (x4)
    • MIDI Thru (T)

Further details

The module generates 4 independent CV outputs derived from a programmable range of MIDI CC messages (e.g. 1-4, or 23-26). In the following description, we’ll call the lowest CC the ‘base’ CC (e.g. for the range 23-26, CC23 is the base CC). The outputs are labeled ‘a, b, c, d’, where ‘a’ is the voltage derived from the base CC, ‘b’ is derived from ‘base+1’ CC etc. In addition, the mcc/4 can also be used as a MIDI-CV converter (see below).

The UI on the module is based on a single button:

  • Short press (less than 4 seconds): 'Listen' mode: The next MIDI CC message received will be the new 'base' CC. If no CC is received, then the module will revert to the last-stored base CC (see table below for special cases). Whilst in 'listen' mode, the MIDI LED will light — the LED extinguishes when listen mode is no longer active (either due to timeout, or because a suitable MIDI message has been received)
  • Long Press (longer than 4 seconds): Writes the current base CC to eeprom, along with the currently active CV values. This means that the next time the module is powered on the current base CC is reloaded as well as the values of those 4 CCs. Whilst the button is pressed, the LED will light — when the write to eeprom has completed, the LED will extinguish.

Modes

The mcc/4 has the following operational modes depending upon which MIDI message it receives:

MIDI CC

  • a: CC
  • b: CC+1
  • c: CC+2
  • d: CC+3

Pitch Bend

  • a: Pitch bend
  • b: CC 1 (Mod wheel)
  • c: CC 2 (Breath Control)
  • d: CC 3

Note On

  • a: Gate
  • b: Trigger
  • c: Velocity CV
  • d: Note CV

Ordinarily, each output is scaled between 0-5v, however in the MIDI-CV mode, the 'Note CV' output is scaled between 0-4.096v for pitch accuracy, giving a range of C-0 (MIDI Note 24) to C4 (MIDI Note 72).

Shipping policy

Unfortunately it is not possible to link product stock levels with those from the regular wonkystuff shop, so there might be times when items are not currently in stock. In these cases I will contact you to update the expected shipping times (which will need to include the manufacturing time of course).

This is not my main job, so shipping has to fit around evenings and weekends — please feel free to contact me if you think things are taking too long!

Here are some extras that might be useful for your project!
