The MZ-RH1 is widely regarded as one of the best MiniDisc portables ever made. However, it suffers from a fatal flaw: the original OLED displays tend to dim significantly over time due to a manufacturing defect. Now, almost 20 years after its release, many MZ-RH1 units have become practically unusable because of this issue, with the displays becoming nearly impossible to read. Until recently, there were no repair parts available to address this problem — but that has changed!
I am pleased to present a replacement display module for the MZ-RH1. The module comes with two OLED displays, meaning that you can replace both OLEDs in your MZ-RH1 with a single module.
Q: Is the module a drop-in replacement?
A: Revision F+ is a full drop-in replacement, no modifications to the internal plastic or electronics are needed. For revision F, the answer is yes and no. While no electrical modifications or soldering are required, some physical modification is necessary. To properly fit the module, a single small piece of plastic must be trimmed from the internal plastic bracket.
Q: What are the differences with the original display?
A: The new module uses modern OLED technology with a smaller pixel size, which results in sharper text but also slightly smaller content compared to the original display. Note that no details are lost as the visible resolution is the same, the content is just slightly smaller.
Q: Can anyone perform the installation?
A: Installing this replacement display does require some technical skill. The MZ-RH1 is a delicate device, and improper handling during disassembly can easily damage the plastic components that hold the unit together. It is highly recommended to watch several instructional videos on YouTube that cover RH1 repairs before attempting the installation. If you’re not confident in your ability to perform the replacement, consider seeking help from someone with experience in electronics repair as per the guide below.
Q: Is there an installation guide available?
A: Yes! You can find the official guide by me, the creator of the module, here: MZ-RH1 Display Module Installation Guide
Q: Do the displays come with a warranty?
A: Yes, one year worldwide, two years in the EU.
Q: Am I allowed to resell the product?
A: You are allowed to resell the display module if it is part of an installation/repair service that you provide (e.g. you or a colleague performs the installation). Reselling the display module directly (without installation) to customers is only allowed with explicit permission. If you resell without explicit permission, you agree to take all responsibility for any warranty claims.
Q: Do you make these displays yourself?
A: Yes, all units are built and assembled by me in my home in Belgium. After assembly, I test each unit individually on an actual MZ-RH1 to make sure no faulty units are shipped.
