What is it?

[This video content is unavailable on this device]

This is an anemometer that measures wind speed and direction based on the difference in arrival time of ultrasonic waves generated by the movement of the wind. Unlike traditional mechanical anemometers (such as windmill types), it measures the wind contactlessly, allowing it to quickly respond to and accurately measure wind speeds ranging from light breezes to strong gusts.

Traditional ultrasonic anemometers are generally expensive and large devices used mainly for meteorological observations and industrial measurements. However, this anemometer, named ULSA, is characterized by its very compact, palm-sized design.

There is also a more compact model that only includes the wind speed measurement function. (-> ULSA BASIC)

Why did you make it?

I am a Japanese maker who is independently developing a paraglider-style payload recovery system for weather observation balloons.

STRATOVISION

Initially, the ultrasonic anemometer ULSA was developed to measure the airspeed of payload in the severe upper-atmosphere conditions (however, please note that the ULSA being sold is only compatible with ground-level measurements).

By purchasing the anemometer, you will be providing funding for my balloon development project. I would be grateful for your support of my endeavors through the ultrasonic anemometer ULSA.

What makes it special?

1. Fast response & High Sensitivity

Ultrasonic Anemometers do not generate inertia or friction like traditional mechanical anemometer, allowing for a fast response and a high sensitive measurement.

2. Measurement in all horizontal directions!

Conventional thermal anemometers and pitot tube speedometers have sharp directivity, making flexible installation and operation challenging. However, an ultrasonic anemometer can correctly capture wind speed and direction from any 360° horizontal direction.

3. 9DoF sensor inside

The ULSA M5B is equipped with a 9DoF sensor (Bosch BNO055) that can be connected and used via the M5Stack. By implementing a digital compass, the reference direction of the wind can be fixed to the magnetic north. Therefore, even if it is mounted on a rotating object such as a multicopter, the correct wind direction can be obtained.

4. High customizability!

The ULSA M5B allows you to stack the popular microcontroller module, M5Stack, directly on top. Since M5Stack can be freely programmed with Arduino or UIFlow, you can build a variety of wind-sensing applications to suit your needs!

For information about the wind speed meter demo firmware that can be immediately installed on M5Stack, please see below.

5. Fully Calibrated

ULSA is individually calibrated before shipment to check that it meets the specifications. For wind speed calibration, a high-quality Japanese-made hot-wire anemometer with pressure calibration and a Japanese-made wind tunnel for anemometer calibration are used.

Gap Spacer Selection

The optional spacers explained in this section are not necessary if you are only stacking the M5Stack Core2.

The ULSA M5B is optimally designed for the M5Stack Core2. As a result, when you stack the M5Stack Basic or extension modules (such as Proto-Module or 13.2 standard), a "gap" arises between them and the ULSA. To eliminate this gap and securely fix the M5Stack, we recommend using a spacer.
