The z.mote Thumbwheel is a compact, performance-focused electric skateboard remote designed for riders who prefer the familiar thumb throttle while still benefiting from the same engineering philosophy, safety features, and wireless reliability found in the z.mote Dual Trigger remote.

Designed for DIY electric skateboards, VESC-based builds, and custom electric vehicles, the z.mote combines a custom-designed PCB, carefully selected components, advanced safety firmware, and a robust mechanical design into a comfortable and dependable controller.

Rather than using low-cost components commonly found in many hobby remotes, the z.mote focuses on reliability, durability, and long-term performance.

Precision Thumbwheel Mechanism

The thumbwheel uses a carefully selected long-life precision potentiometer rated for approximately 1 million rotations, far exceeding the lifespan of typical potentiometers used in most remotes.

To provide an exceptionally smooth feel, the thumbwheel rotates on a ball bearing, eliminating unwanted friction and ensuring consistent operation throughout its lifetime.

The deadman's switch uses a high-quality microswitch rated for approximately 100,000 clicks. Combined with a dedicated return spring, it provides a crisp and reassuring tactile feel while helping prevent accidental throttle input if the remote is released.

Mechanical Design & Durability

The z.mote was designed with long-term reliability in mind.

Critical structural areas do not rely on threaded plastic.

Where mechanical strength is required, the design uses:

  • Embedded metal nuts
  • Machine screws
  • Reinforced mounting points

This allows the enclosure to be opened and serviced repeatedly without damaging the threads.

The entire mechanical structure was designed around durability and serviceability rather than reducing manufacturing costs.

Wireless Communication & Receiver

The z.mote uses a dedicated wireless communication system optimized for electric skateboard applications.

During testing, the remote maintained reliable communication even in challenging environments with multiple WiFi and Bluetooth devices nearby and several physical obstacles between the remote and receiver.

In real riding conditions, the available communication range exceeds what is practically required for an electric skateboard, providing a stable and dependable connection.

The included receiver supports:

UART Communication

For advanced controllers and VESC-based builds.

PPM Output

For broader compatibility with different electric skateboard electronics.

Receiver connection options:

  • Open-ended cable
  • Male/Female JR Futaba servo connector

The receiver should be powered from a 5V supply.

Battery & Charging

The remote is designed around a 102050 Li-ion battery, offering long riding sessions while maintaining a compact form factor.

  • Automatic shutdown at low battery voltage

Due to shipping restrictions, batteries cannot be included.

Optional RGB Lighting

The remote can optionally be equipped with WS2812 RGB lighting.

When selected, transparent resin buttons allow the RGB lighting to shine through with multiple visual effects.

Without the lighting option, the buttons will match the enclosure color.
