Gökunge

The name comes from the Cuckoo bird's (Gök, Gök unge - Swedish for the Cuckoo bird's child.) habit of being brood parasites, where they stick their eggs in another birds nest to be cared for by another parent bird. Much like this Grid Ortho keyboard hiding itself in just about any plain 60's case.

Being a grid ortho keyboard, it fit's 69 key in the standard 'small' size format, with two optional 2u 'thumb keys' in four optional postions, and up to three encoders as well as a 1.5 inch 128x128 pixel white OLED screen for all your Bongo Cat needs. The layout forms a 5x12 'main' part with a 6x6 side area ideal for an arrow cluster or similar under the display. Being flippable, it can be built either for a lefty or a righty just as easily.

Main Features:

  • QMK and VIAL compatible, fully programmable keyboard
  • RP2040 MCU, Dual-core Arm Cortex M0+ processor, flexible clock running up to 133 MHz
    • 264 KB of SRAM, and more than 2 MB of Flash memory ¹
    • USB-C connector to host computer, (USB 1.1 device and host support)
    • Low-power sleep and dormant modes
    • Drag-and-drop programming using mass storage over USB
  • Kaihl hot-swap sockets for Cherry MX compatible switches (3 & 5-pin) ²
  • Cherry Style PCB mounted stabilizers (Clip-in type preferred)³.
  • Reversible PCB design, identical options for both sides.
  • Two main layouts (67-69 keys):
    • 5x12 + 6x6 with the display to the left
    • 5x12 + 6x6 with the display to the right
    • Configurable bottom row - Full 1u grid or up to two 2u keys (Soldered, choosen at build) ⁴
  • 1.5 inch, 128x128px white OLED (SH1007 QMK compatible driver)
  • Fits most 'standard' 60% cases, like GH60, Poker etc. (See compatability list)

Optional add-ons:

These options requires additional components not included in this listing and sold separately.

  • Optional Rotary Encoder (0 - 3 pcs)
    • Upper right corner
    • Upper left corner
    • Top row of the side area (3 possible positions, select one)
  • Optional per-Key RGB (67 - 69 pcs, SK6803 only)

Build Features:

  • Reversible PCB design, identical options for both sides.
  • Full build instructions printed on the PCB for an easy build.
  • Smaller SMD components (RP2040 MCU, Flash memory & supporting components) are always fully pre-soldered and tested.
  • Larger SMD components (HotSwap Sockets & OLED display) are user mountable, and suitable for a beginner to solder.
  • The USB type C connector is installed on either side of the PCB to fit case port. (Intermediate skill, can be presoldered)
  • Optional parts (RGB & Rotary encoders) are user mountable, and suitable for a beginner to solder.

Physical dimensions:

Dimensions (LxBxH): 285 x 95 mm, height based on case.

Build Level

DIY Kit

This one is fairly obvious. You get a PCB and parts, and you solder all the parts yourself, choosing wich side you want to orient the OLED at. This is suitable for an intermediate skillset, due to the USB type C port.

All other parts are well suitable to a beginner, being large and almost outright hard to damage. And even if you have never soldered SMD parts before, using a decent soldering iron and practicing a fair bit of patience, you should be able to build this even as a beginner. The USB type C connector is a little bit more challenging, but still quite DIY friendly. ⁵

Partially Built

If you do want to build the keyboard yourself, but are either a novice at soldering, or unsure and want a little help. This comes with the more challenging parts like the USB type C port and the two small SMD switches already soldered and tested. This way you can build the more basic parts yourself, and know that the USB type C connector will in fact work from the start.

Left to install for a basic build is just the OLED and the HotSwap sockets.

Fully Built

This option allows you to have a fully built, ready-to-use keyboard, where you simply need to flash/configure the firmware and assemble the case/keys/stabilizers/caps you have chosen to start using it. A very basic firmware is flashed at delivery, but does not include any special features, so adding Bongo Cat is all up to you!

This fee includes soldering of ALL the components, and if RGB LED's and encoders is included in the order, soldering of these are also included in the fee. However this option DOES NOT INCLUDE the components needed like the rotary encoders and RGB LED's in the given price. This is ONLY the cost of the build/work/time needed. You need to also ADD the components needed to the order.

Please Note: The layout is by default assumed to be a full 1u grid if nothing else is specified in a message with the order !

Case & Plate

The PCB design is made to fit most of the standard 60's tray cases, meant for the classic Poker and GH60 and similar PCB's. Since the grid ortho layout places some of the screw-in columns in the middle of the hotswap sockets, for cases with fixed columns, these may need to be modified/removed.

Since the keyboard has a unique layout with the display, you need an equally unique plate. A plate is available in FR4 (PCB material) with the outline to fit the same cases as the PCB. (Currently offered in gloss white, black will be added soon.)

Version 1.00 - Initial version

¹ Please note that Gökunge supports only Cherry MX type switches (3 & 5 pin), NOT Kaihl Choc, as they require a different PCB and plate design.

² With an RP2040 MCU, QMK uses part of flash to emulate EEPROM which is the memory type important for QMK/Vial keymap's and other functions. (QMK can address up to 64 bytes, which uses 128 bytes with wear leveling) with 2 MB+ available, it is unlikely you will be able to fill the Flash memeory unless you really, really go wild with animations. ³ Clip-in stabilizers are preferred, as they can clip into the PCB holes with all sockets installed. Bolt-in stabilizers can still be used, but you will need a felt/plastic washer or similar to avoid short circuiting the sockets with the metal bolt heads.

⁴ HotSwap sockets (& RGB LED's) are overlapping, and can only be installed in one of the possible positions for each 2u key. It's quite possible to de-solder and reconfigure the PCB if you want to, but this is not an 'easy' HotSwap solution.

⁵ Soldering experience is not needed, but it certainly helps. And if you have never ever held a soldering iron, please ask in discord, and I'm happy to help recommend tools, or how to practice first, and how to solder to avoid destroying things.
