What is WDC W65C02S PLCC44 to DIP40 Adapter?

I needed to test my stock of W65C02S PLCC44 packaged CPU's.

Initially I had thought that I'd use a generic PLCC44 to DIP40 Adapter, as used with EPROM Programmers (like the TL866 family).

But, on investigation, I discovered that the W65C02S PLCC44 package pinout is not compatible with a simple commonly available Adpater. The pin-out is also not compatible with other 65C02 PLCC packaged CPUs. You'll find a seperate product listing for my R65C02 or G65SC02 PLCC44 to DIP40 Adapter.

Therefore, I made this custom designed Adapter, specifically for the WDC W65C02S in its PLCC package.

Note that this Adapter is only for use with WDC W65C02S PLCC44 packaged CPUs. It is not compatible with the R65C02 or G65SC02 CPUs etc., which have a different pin-out! See my seperate listing for a R65C02 or G65SC02 Adapter (and optional tested & verified CPU)..

Why would I need it?

PLCC packaged Retro IC's are very cool. There is a definite appeal to their compact look, and a very definite appeal to the way they nicely click into their PLCC sockets.

Furthermore, PLCC sockets are available in Through-Hole (TH) format, making them very Retro-friendly for your Through-Hole only PCB projects.

If you have a 6502 based system, that currently uses a DIP40 packaged CPU, and you would like to add the appeal of PLCC to your system, then this Adapter also includes round-pins so they insert nicely into a DIP40 IC socket.

Note that normal square-pin headers (that may be used on other pre-made Adapters), will not insert into a normal IC socket. Or, more specifically, they will not insert into a quality round-pin IC socket, and will actually damage a regular flat-pin IC socket. Please only insert these slimmer round-pin headers into an IC socket!

It's over to you to determine if the Adapter will be physically suitable for your intended usage.

To satisfy everyones needs, I've split the WDC W65C02S PLCC44 to DIP40 Adapter Kitset into an optional add-on pack.

Firstly, note that the base price is for the double-sided silkscreened WDC W65C02S PLCC44 to DIP40 Adapter PCB Only.

Then you add the optional Hardware Pack to complete the Kitset, depending on your parts requirements.

I've not added a Pack option for a Tested & Verified WDC W65C02S PLCC packaged Microprocessor (like my other PLCC to DIP Adapters), as the WDC W65C02S CPU is still in production and is therefore available new, from many recognised parts suppliers.

• 1x 40-pin Round-Pin Gold-plated Header strip (to cut into 2x 20-pin strips)
