Build your own Numpad/macropad!

UnOrthoDox is a simple to build, hotswap capable 17/20-key Numpad with two optional Rotary Encoders, Per-Key RGB and a minimal footprint matching in format to many 60% keyboards.

It's designed with a minimalistic Sandwich style case in the same FR4 fibreglass material as the PCB (available in black & white) as part of the kit making it cheap & easy to build without sacrificing functionality or desing, as the case showcases the RGB nicely. And you can easily take the same PCB and design a more elaborate case for it be it 3D printed or machined, as an upgrade down the line. (I will add designs for 3D printed cases along the line).

A minimal number of components make the kit relatively cheap, and despite being surface mount components, it's larger sized components make it easy to build for anyone that has some experience soldering before hand, and it should make an excellent first SMD build to practice on.

Designed to use the powerful RP2040 in a low-cost controller RP2040-Zero, and being fully compatible with QMK/Vial, the kit gives you ample memory for use of advanced firmware features like macro's, tap-dance and multiple layers.

UnOrthoDox comes in two PCB variants one is the classic 17-key Numpad, and the other a full 20-key 4x5 macro pad version. Both versions fit the same sandwich style case and use the same basic components. The 17-key design is reversible allowing the kit to be built as 'southpaw' with no additional components needed.

Sandwich style Case plates

The UnOrthoDox comes with a full sandwich style case, avilable in either Black or White, fitting both variants of the PCB. The plate material (1.6mm thick FR4 fibreglass) has a relatively stiff and bouncy feel, and the open sides allow the Per-Key RGB to shine out creating an ambient glow. A sandwich style case means a full free floating PCB, only held captive by the switches.

  • Reversible top plate supporting 4x5 or 17-key Numpad layout
  • Full back plate with printed build instructions.

Additional Component Kit

This kit is available as an add-on option, making the build easy to complete.

  • (20 pcs) 1N4148W diodes
  • (18/20 pcs) Kailh (Cherry MX type) Hotswap sockets
  • (1 pcs) Level Shifter (Translates 3.3V to 5V for RGB LED's
  • (4 pcs) M2x10mm spacers
  • (8 pcs) M2x4mm bolts

Optional

Additional Components needed to complete the build

To build a complete working keyboard you will need to add the following of your own choosing:

Not offered for sale in this shop

  • (1 pcs) USB cable (USB type C, host side depending on your computer)
  • (17-20 pcs) Key Switches, Cherry MX compatible
  • (3 pcs) PCB mounted 1U stabilizers, Cherry MX compatible
  • (1 set) Key Caps, Cherry MX compatible (Suitable for Numpad layout)

Build Guide

The rear plate has most of the needed build instructions printed on the silkscreen, and you can likely build the entire keyboard from these! If you however need more detailed instructions, please refer to the GitHub link to Documentation below.

If ever the instructions in the build guide and the instructions on the silkscreen are different, the version on your actual PCB is what are infact relevant for your version!
